25th Annual Faculty Recital


The 25th Annual Great Neck Public Schools Faculty Recital will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., at South High School, 341 Lakeville Rd. The event promises to again be an exhilarating evening of outstanding music provided by GNPS faculty and friends, one not to be missed! Performing solo or in groups, instrumental and vocal musicians will give concert-hall-caliber presentations. Highlights from the evening include: Mozart's "Kegelstatt Trio," for viola, clarinet, and piano; Mozart's "Duettino," from Le Nozze di Figaro; "Life on Mars," by David Bowie; "Younger Than Springtime," from South Pacific; "What More Can I Say," from Falsettos; and selections from My Fair Lady. Suggested ticket prices, at the door, are $5 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults. Proceeds will benefit the Music Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue musical studies. Kennedy School's Little Free Libraries

In addition to its large school library, John F. Kennedy School sports something very special--four Little Free Libraries, three on-site and one donated to the Great Neck Park District. Kennedy's Little Free Library initiative was based on the international Little Free Library program that seeks "to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges." Kennedy's Assistant Principal Kathleen Murray explained that the project was wholeheartedly supported by the school's Student Council, which was looking for "innovative ways to promote literacy in our school." The Student Council will maintain all the Little Libraries. After searching the building for existing structures that would be suitable for Little Libraries, three were found to be perfect--two old card catalogs and the no-longer-used phone booth. The fourth Little Free Library is a replica of the Stepping Stones Lighthouse. One card-catalog Library sits in the school's main lobby with general-interest books, the other is located near the school's previous main entrance. This second card-catalog Library is named the "Catherine Moore Little Free Library," in honor of the former principal. Ms. Moore donated books on diversity for this Library. Both card catalogs were converted into Little Libraries by the school district's carpentry crew. The third Little Free Library is the former phone booth located in the hall outside the school's main office. Parent Deborah Kashanian designed and painted the phone booth transforming it into a beautiful lending Library. The phone booth's top shelf holds books for parents; the lower one, for students. The fourth Little Free Library is a replica of the Stepping Stones Lighthouse built by George McCarthy, Ms. Murray's late father. The school donated it to the Steppingstone Park Playscape to have books available for young children who visit. All the JFK Little Free Libraries are registered with the Little Free Library Worldwide and received charter certificates. There are nearly 40,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world.


Teacher Featured in Solo Exhibition

Rosemary Sloggatt, long-time art teacher at Saddle Rock School, will have a one-person art show at the East Islip Public Library Gallery, from Nov. 1-30. The exhibit, "Growing Up," will feature nearly 40 works, including paintings, prints, and shadow boxes, based on personal family photographs from Ms. Sloggatt's childhood. A library spokesperson said, "The exhibit will be layered with memory and age, reflecting both the photographic processes available at the time and the subsequent aging of the photograph. While the casual viewer may only see depictions of Polaroid or instamatic photographs, upon closer look, the photo-technical references are a filter for Ms. Sloggatt's childhood memories." Ms. Sloggatt said of her exhibit, "It is my hope that the images in my works will create varied experiences for the viewer. On a subject as close and tender as family, the experience between viewer and work of art can be filled with meaning, memory, and, most of all, emotion. Viewers may find their engagement with the images to be, perhaps, the recapturing of a forgotten moment or the creation of a new one. In addition, I am planning to record a video tour of the exhibit to share with my third- and fourth-grade students who will be creating artworks this year based on their own family photographs and special memories." Teacher Published in Film Journal

Thomas Hahn, an English teacher new to North High School, had his essay on masculinity in the film, The Machinist, published in Bright Lights Film Journal, a popular online academic film magazine. The Machinist is a 2004 thriller in which insomnia and psychological problems lead Trevor Reznik, the machinist, to cause a serious workplace accident. Mr. Hahn wrote, "The majority of the film is spent depicting Trevor's paranoia…[his] delusions grow with every failed attempt to achieve manhood. He attempts to become something that is unachievable in Gatsby-esque fashion." Prior to coming to North High, Mr. Hahn taught high school and college literature and creative writing for 10 years in Connecticut and New York. He finds North students "some of the most respectful kids I have had the pleasure of teaching, which is a testament to the Great Neck parents' dedication." Mr. Hahn is a PhD candidate at St. John's University where he was recently awarded an academic fellowship to study "Theoretical Anxiety in the Academic Novel." He also teaches undergraduate World Literature at St. John's. His fiction and non-fiction works and poetry have been published in several online journals, including, Evolution, The Knotting House Review, and Headlock Press. His novel, Open My Eyes, was a finalist for a book prize through New Rivers Press (Minnesota), and a short story was a semifinalist for the Norman Mailer Award.


UPK Registration for 2017-18

Enrollment for the Great Neck Public Schools Universal Prekindergarten Program (UPK) for the 2017-2018 school year will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 1. This program is offered to all district residents at no cost. In order to be eligible, children must be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2017. The UPK program is housed primarily at the Parkville School, 10 Campbell St., New Hyde Park. Morning and afternoon sessions are available. District bus transportation is only provided to and from the Parkville School for either the morning or the afternoon session. In compliance with the New York State Education Department, some students can attend the district's UPK collaborative agency, Great Neck Community School, 225 Schenck Ave. District bus transportation is not available to or from this location. UPK registration will be held schooldays at the Office of Registration and Attendance, located in the Phipps Administration Building, 345 Lakeville Road, from Tuesday, Nov. 1-Wednesday, Nov. 16. It is not necessary to bring your child to registration. Registration will take place between 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., according to the following schedule: last names starting with the letters A-F, register on Nov. 1 or 2; last names starting with the letters G-K, register on Nov. 3 or 4; last names starting with L-O, on Nov. 7 or 9; last names starting with P-T, on Nov. 10 or 14; and last names starting with the letters U-Z, register on Nov. 15 or 16. No placements will be made until the end of the registration period. Therefore, it is unnecessary to register before the days and times listed above.
